Name: Ruby Troeh
Age: 25
Race: Human
Alignment: Revolutionary
Physical Description:
Ruby is of average height, just over 5'6". She has dark brown eyes and black hair, parted in the middle. It is usually left loose, but Ruby has been known to pull it back with handed-down clips, in simple ponytails. She has a pretty (if not serious) face, with high cheekbones, a large forehead, and a flat nose. Her ears are quite large, and her younger sister sometimes teases her about them. Her skin is tanned, and although she has an hourglass body shape, it is very slight, and she has a flat bust. Her hands are rough from farming and hard labor, and she is very athletic and in shape.
Coming from a poor family, Ruby does not spend much money on frivolities. She does not wear make up, and all the jewelry she owns is passed down from her mother and has been in the family for generations. Ruby dresses quite simply out of necessity, but her tastes run in that direction in any case. Rough, sturdy dresses that she made herself in the 1920's fashion are a staple. Ruby is poor, but that doesn't mean she is a shabby dresser. Although she may dress plainly, she looks put together and neat at any time.
Personality Description:
Ruby is headstrong and stubborn, disliking being told what to do and when to do it. She tends to adopt passive aggressive tactics when ordered about - sure, she'll do the work, but she won't like it. She gets worked up about things she is passionate about - which is quite a lot. She can get carried away with ideas and find it hard to simmer down, and she struggles to keep her temper in check. She can be extremely argumentative and bossy, and although she doesn't expect to get her way, she expects people to be competent and can get irritated and impatient if she's putting more effort into things than others are.
She's responsible and self-sufficient, independent and headstrong (if not a bit serious). She doesn't waste time with hopes or wishes, but instead firmly believes that if you want something done you have to work for it yourself. This causes her to work too hard, often over-exerting herself, but she is dedicated and tenacious and refuses to give up on something or someone. She can sometimes be a bit spiteful and resentful, untrusting of strangers, but she is inherently practical and (although it is difficult) will put aside her prejudice for the common good.
Short History:
Ruby Troeh is a Chinook Indian from the Cathlapotle tribe. Her people lived on the southwest side of the Colombia river in what was once the main village of Nahpooitle. Her mother and father, worried about the future, assumed English names and moved to the north. They were proud Chinook, but in the early 1800's so many new settlers began to move in and settle down. Gracie's grandfather was the one who suggested the move - the influx of white settlers did not bode well for the future of the tribe. Not everyone left, of course, but he felt his family would have a better chance in the cities. Gracie was born in 1895 and grew up working in factories and farms. Her mother named her after the color, the gem, and although life was hard, Ruby's early life was not unhappy. She and her younger sister Charlotte worked the family farm, and they sold the produce at the farmer's markets.
When she was 17 and her sister 15, their mother feel ill and died of pneumonia. It was then that Ruby's father decided that the work would be better in a different city, perhaps on the opposite coast. He packed his daughters up and about six months after the funeral the family found themselves living in New York.
Life continued much the same way - they sold produce, lived life, scraped a living. When Ruby was 20, her sister got married (she was 18 at the time) and moved to Michigan. The two still correspond, with letters.
It was when Ruby turned 22 that she learned of the fey. She had never been very superstitious before, but her family did not discount spirits and supernatural dealings. Ruby and her father lived about 5 miles from the town proper, and lack of any transportation meant they worked out a deal with a neighboring farm (larger than theirs) - Mr. Corey would drive them in his truck to the market area, and in return they would give him a basket of vegetables and fruits, as Mr. Corey's farm dealt largely with livestock and not produce. They knew him to be half-fey, and as they got to know him he revealed that his mother was kept hidden in the barn, living in secret lest she be "collected."
One day, of course, she was, and did not live to see the end of the year. She went in for...whatever it was, and never returned. She had been old, although by fey standards she was still quite young, and her will was weak. She simply had no fight left in her. Ruby and her father attended a remembrance, as Mr. Corey had no body to bury. It angered Ruby that anyone could be treated so poorly (remembering how her own people were treated only made her ire rise). She sympathized with Mr. Corey, having lost her own mother, and made a silent pact to help others like him - it didn't matter to her whether or not they were fey or human. She was determined to help stop this, and began slowly collecting information, hoping to discover useful tidbits or be of any use to the Resistance (which she joined informally, because in her mind she is her own anti-government group). She didn't like the government before, but now her dislike went even deeper.
